READING COMPREHENSION

AFTER THE FLIGHT

When we get off (= leave) the plane, the cabin crew (= all the flight attendants) and the captain say goodbye and we enter the arrivals hall (= the place where we go when we leave the plane). Then we go to the baggage claim area (= the area where we can collect our luggage) and wait for our bags to appear on the conveyor belt (= a special thing which moves and we can take our luggage from it). Before we leave the airport, we need to go through customs (= the place at the airport where our bags are looked at to find out if we have anything illegal). We show there if we have anything to declare (= e.g. we carry too much alcohol). If we have something to declare, we will need to go through a red gate and we will be asked to pay some money for it.

Now we are ready to leave the airport and we can hire (= rent) a car or take a bus or taxi to the city.

More contexts for the new words:

They got in the car and drove away.
(= We get on a plane, but we get in a car)
I have nothing to declare.
(= I have no things I need to pay extra for)

EXERCISE 1
Decide if the sentences are correct or incorrect. Correct the sentences which are wrong.

1. If you have nothing to declare, you don’t have to pay.
2. On a conveyor belt, bags travel around.
3. You are in the arrivals hall before you fly.
4. Customs is the place at the airport where you can have coffee.
5. If you hire a car, you pay for using it for –e.g. – a few days.
6. If you lose your luggage, you go to the baggage claim area.

ENGLISH IN USE

This time we have another example of PASSIVE VOICE. Let’s learn about Future Simple Passive.

This is a sentence from the text:

… we will be asked to pay some money …

This structure works in the same way as PASSIVE VOICE with modal verbs, so generally it looks like this:

WILL + BE + PAST PARTICIPLE

Here there are some more examples for you to look at:

This car will be driven by him.
This computer will be bought tomorrow.

.

IDIOM CLOSE-UP
